Woven Stories: Discovering Textiles in Northern Italy

There's something about the rocky region of northern Italy at the base of the Alps that feels inherently tactile. The soft touch of the warm cashmere made in this region contrasts with the cold, hard stone of the mountains. Cashmere becomes the warm defense against the cold, its softness is the welcome comfort next to our skin.

Following her instincts, Lori explored the textile heritage of Biella, Lake Como, and Lombardy. In Biella's historic mills, she found cashmere and merino wool being crafted by generations of artisans. Lake Como revealed intimate family-run ateliers where hand-painted silks are created for luxury houses.

There was no fanfare in these discoveries - just quiet conversations and carefully selected materials. Some pieces spoke to her, while others didn't quite fit. What mattered most wasn't finding the perfect piece, but understanding how these textiles could transform spaces through their presence.

Though she left with only a few swatches, Lori gained something more valuable: connections with artisans, fresh inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for slow, intentional craftsmanship. These Northern Italian textures will stay with her, whether in material or memory.
